"The STILLWELL GENEALOGY [by John E. Stillwell, MD]
says Elias Jr's father was Elias, born about 1663, died 1713-1714 in NJ, son
of Nicholas
II and Rebecca BAYLES. It says that the name of his wife was unknown, but
that she may have been a STANLEY. This account seems reasonable because:
Elias Jr's grandson, John, son of John, said his
grandfather came
from NJ [Letter of Elias Jr's grandson, John, son
of his son, John]:
There is a will recorded in Monmouth County, NJ
for an Elias
STILLWELL who died about 1713, proved Nov. 30,
1715. It says he was
of Middletown, but mentions no children [The
Stillwell Genealogy, by
John E. Stillwell, MD];
The will of Nicholas II, who died 1715, leaves 25
pounds to the
children of his son, Elias. This would SEEM to
indicate that his son
Elias had died before he, Nicholas, did, which
would rule out the
possibility that the Elias who married Anne
BARBANK and was fathering
children in the 1720's was the son of Nicholas II
[The Stillwell
Genealogy, by John E. Stillwell, MD];
The will of John BAYLES, 1682, leaves 7 pounds to
ELYAS STILWELL,
sonne of Nicholas Stilwell and my daughter
Rebecca, his wife,
deceased. A study of all the sources listed on p.
4 reveals no other
Nicholas who could have been married to Rebecca
and fathered a son
before 1682.
The BAYLES family lived in Jamaica, NY, and
Nicholas II is known to
have lived, or at least owned property there.
John E. Stillwell
attributes the following entry to Nicholas II:
1676, June 14. John
BAYLES, Jr of Jamaica, sold to Jonathan
Stevenson, of the same place,
his home-lot, orchard, etc., "that I bought of
Nicholas Stillwell,
now of Gravesend." [Jamaica records, cited in
The Stillwell
Genealogy, by John E. Stillwell, MD];
The names Rebecca and Elias, names that continued
in this branch of
the family for many generations, may have
originated in the BAYLES
family. There were no STILLWELLS with either
name to my [Mary
Jackson? 1987] knowledge among the church records
in England.
Nicholas the emigrant had no known daughter named
Rebecca, although
some sources do suggest that he had a son named
Elias, while others
omit him. Although women named Rebecca married
into the Stillwell
family in the third and fourth generations, the
BAYLES family could
have been the only source for the name ELIAS.
(The one exception to
this is the Elias who married Anne BARBANK, the
identity of and
origin of whose name is unknown to me.)
The name ELIAS was prevalent in the BAYLES
family. Rebecca BAYLES
had a brother with that name. In addition, there
was an Elias
BAYLIES in Setauket, where Rebecca's father lived
from 1668-1674,
after moving there from Jamaica. (After 1674, he
returned to
Jamaica.) A study of all the references listed
at the end of this
work shows that most of the STILLWELLS of this
name [ELIAS] were
born after 1700 and were probably of the fourth
or fifth and later
generations in America. Following is a
description of the six
earliest births given in these references:
(1) Elias, son of Nicholas the emigrant, born
1657; married Sarah
BRASIER in 1676 and had only one child, a
daughter (listed in
sources II, III, VI, and omitted in I, VII,
and V).
(2) Elias, born about 1663, died about
1713-1714, in NJ (listed in
sources I and VII as being the son of
Nicholas II and Rebecca
BAYLES).
(3) Elias, [born Dec. 13, 1685? The Stillwell
Genealogy suggests
that he was born about 1700], married Anne
BARBANK, lived on
Staten Island, had three sons, THOMAS,
DANIEL, and JOHN, whose
births are recorded in the Dutch Church
records. These records
can be found in source IV (listed in sources
II, III, and V as
the son of Nicholas II and Catharine, while
source I and VII
dispute it. Source I lists him separately,
parents unknown.
(4) Elias, Jr (subject of this article), born
1708, in NJ, died
1792 in Fulton County [Note: Before 1850
this was part of
Bedford County], PA who married Meriam EDDY
(listed in source
I).
(5) Elias, son of Nicholas of Shrewsbury, NJ.
According to sources
II, III, and V, this Nicholas was the son of
the emigrant's
son, Daniel, but source I [The Stillwell
Genealogy by John E.
Stillwell] says he was the brother of Elias
Jr. Some present
day researchers believe he was the father of
Rebecca STILLWELL
who married Thomas HEADY in 1749 in Egg
Harbor, NJ, who later
lived in Fayette County, PA, and KY. There
seems to have been
a connection between the family of Rebecca
HEADY and Elias Jr.
(6) Elias, son of Richard, son of the emigrant's
son, Daniel, died
single."

Nicholas Stillwell's first wife' name is not presently
known, but she
was the mother of his two eldest children, Richard, born
1634 in
England, and Nicholas, born 1636 in England.

"As to Ann Stillwell, the wife of Nicholas Stillwell, we
are unable to
state with any degree of certainty her name previous to
her marriage
with Nicholas. It has been stated that she was a sister
of Thomas
BAXTER and Elizabeth [BAXTER] WEEKS, who were the
children of George
BAXTER and his wife Alice. We find that on the 9th day
of July, 1651,
she was present at the baptism of Anne and Thomas, the
children of
Francis and Elizabeth WEEKS, and at the same time and
place, she and her
husband had a child baptized. This being unusual and as
Thomas BAXTER
and his wife were witnesses at the baptism of another
child of Francis
WEEKS (Jacobus) on November 24th, 1652, it would seem as
though Ann
Stillwell and Francis WEEKS' wife Elizabeth were sisters
of Thomas
BAXTER."
Page 42.
After the death of Nicholas Stillwell, on December 29,
1672, Ann
Stillwell married William WILKINS of Gravesend. As it
was the custom
of that time for a year and a day to elapse after a
husband's death and
the remarriage of the widow, it would seem that Nicholas
Stillwell died
on December 28, 1671. Wilkins died a few years after
his marriage to
Ann, and then she married William FOSTER, who, like her
former
husbands, was magistrate of Gravesend. From an entry in
"Bergen's
Early Settlers" it would seem that in July 1678 she went
to England,
where she died."
