Sharilyn , It couldn't have changed much over the years . Check out page 150
of "Hardtack and Coffee" by John Billings for a Civil War rendering . It was
pretty much a post or log affair resembling a carpenter's saw horse elevated
so one's feet were above the ground . 15 lb weights on each leg guarentee a
quite uncomfortable ride . Take care , Kevin
