Collette, Carma and all
last week I finally answered Carma's question after I went back to my
original notebook from 1966 when I copied the affidavit. As I was finishing
I had a thought I mentioned almost off hand, but after it was posted I still
was thinking about it. The affidavit was done on 1880s stationary from a
1698 affidavit. It definitely was copied. The original could have been
English orDuch but the names were probably still in the original style of
Martytje and Margretje and if the handwritng was not clear the typist
could have read it and wrote Maria when it should have been Margaret. We
don't know how good a stenographer it was, if he was familiar with the Dutch
names and writings, or not. That was probably the source of the error, all
of the other sources agree on Margaret forWilliam Teller, Maria for my
ancestor Peter Lockermanse. I will assume that is the correct reading too.
