I would like to revisit a problem I found regarding an ancestor of mine,
Cornelis Jans Van Derveer who came from Alkmaar in 1659. Correspondance
with someone in the Netherlands has shown that he left "in a hurry as the
result of an accident" and it is believed that the "accident" involved a
homicide. He changed his name from Dominicus to Van Derveer in the New
World.

On Nov 20, 1663 Gerret Lubertsen, Jan Cornelis Buys and his wife Ebertje
Luberts (sister to Gerret) forgave Cornelis Jansen van Alkmaar for
accidentally killing their son Lubbert Jans. Hoffman in the American
Genealogist V22 p 22-26 states that this is not Cornelis Jansen Van Derveer
because, though he came on a ship from Alkmaar, he was from Kloetinge or the
village of Wemeldinge near Kloetinge. Question 1. Was there another
Cornelis Jans van Alkmaar in New Amsterdam?

Question 2. Could this problem with the Buys family have occurred in the
Netherlands? What was the origin of the Buys family?

I have the complete record of the various appearences in court for this
problem if anyone is interested. They forgave Cornelis about 3 times, and
the case petered out in 1664 when the English took over (I think)
The last, Jan 10, 1664 when Cornelis Jansen from Alckmaer now of Midwout
praying a pardon for accidental manslaughter he committed. the Fiscal was to
inquire into the report in the above case, and that seems to be the end of
discussion. Any advice? Kris
