"Removed" means a difference in the number of generations from a common
ancestor. For example, if you are 7th cousins with someone, it means that
both of you are 7 generations from a common ancestor. But if you're 7th
cousins, once removed, that means that one of you is 7 generations from the
common ancestor, and one is either 8 or 6 (the removed works both ways).
You can be 3rd cousins three times removed, etc.
