Dear Frans, You asked, "A child of Christina and Jacobus Hey was bap 4
June 1651 NY. Who has more information on Jacob Hey and his children?
The child of Jacob Hay and Christina Capoens baptized on 4
Jun 1651 in the New Amsterdam Dutch Church was their daughter, Maria Hay.
On 25 Apr 1659 Christina Capoens Hay paid for the passage of her nephew,
Laurens Van der Spiegel, to come to New Amsterdam. She gave a big party
to welcome Laurens, and it is of record because during the festivities
several silver spoons were stolen.
Jacob Hay was dead by 5 Aug 1659 when marriage intentions were recorded
between "David Jochemszen, Van Amsterdam, and Christina Capoens, widow of
Jacob Hey."
David Jochemszen and Christina Capoens made their joint will on 20 July
1682. He left his whole estate to his wife, Christina Capoens, and made
her the executrix of his will. Christina, in turn, left one half of her
estate to David and the other half to her daughter Maria Hays "begotten of
her former husband Jacob Hay". The couple was affluent; for Christina
left her husband one gold chain and two gold rings.
This will was proved on 7 July 1682, and Christina was granted letters of
administration on 8 July 1682.
Christina Cappoens, late widow of David Jochemson, deceased, wrote another
will on 17 June 1687. She leaves her considerable property to her
daughter Maria Hays married to Peter Praa. (Peter was Maria's second
husband; she had been previously married to Joost Adriaenszen Molenaer.)
In this will Christina Capoens names her grand daughter "Sara Molenaer
procured by Joost Adriaenszen Molenaer, and Catrina Praa, procured by
[Maria's] present husband Peter Praa" and makes provision for "such other
children that [Maria] may have."
Christina makes bequests of items of gold, silver, and diamonds! She also
leaves to her grand daughter, Sara Molenaer, "a salt-cellar marked with
the full name of Christina Roselaers and marked with her coat of arms,
also a silver beaker marked with the same, and a silver mustard pot marked
with the name of Jacob Hay..."
Christina made the Honorable Nicholas Bayard, Mayor, and her cousin Jacob
Ver Hulst and Mister John Harperdingh executors. She added a final
acerbic note:
"If my son-in-law Peter Praa opposes this will, or if he misbehave himself
as to the children, he shall be debarred from all benefits."
The witnesses were William Bogardus and Jacob Maurits.
On 2 Sep 1693 Christina Capoens confirmed the will. HOwever, since Jacob
Verhulst -- one of the executors -- had died, she appointed her cousin Rip
Van Dam, merchant, to be an executor in Jacob's place. She also
commented, "If my executors deem it best that my daughter's child, Sara
Molenaer, should be placed elsewhere to be maintained, they are to use the
rents of the great house for that purpose."
Reading between the lines, I would guess that Peter Praa was tempted to
slight his step-daughter in favor of his own child.
The final will of Christina Cappoens was proved on 15 Nov 1693.
It seems quite clear that Jacob Hay and Christina Capoens had only one
daughter -- Maria Hay -- and that Christina had no children by her second
husband, Davis Jochemszen.
I wonder who "Christina Roselaers... with her coat of arms" might have
been!
