Susan,
I'm really just guessing here, but it would appear that "shoeing" was a
mispelling of "Showing", i.e they were doing parlor tricks, slight of hand,
disappearing coins etc. As for "throwing the stocking", I'm really going out
on a limb here, but I suspect it had something to with signaling that the
marriage had been consummated. I'd be interested in the comments of others.
