The WIC also seems to have been known as GWC. There is a logo
on the front of Gwenn Epperson's New Netherland Roots book
with these initials. The W is big and the G and C are smaller
and in the center of the two outer lines of the W.

In describing this, Ms. Epperson says:
"The monogram on the cover of the book is taken from the seal of
New Amsterdam whcih was designed in Holland and sent by the Company to
Stuyvesant, who gave it to the Magistrates of the city on December 8,
1654. The monogram stands for the Geoctroyerde Westindische
Compagnie (The Chartered West India Company)."

I can't find "Geoctroyerde" in my Dutch/English dictionary.
Can someone comment on that word and its use?
