Howard,

Thank you for this excellent point. I had not considered the
sounds of the surnames but your explanation makes sense.

You also reinforced what I meant (but neglected to explain
clearly) - that in this case it was likely that it was the
transcription not the original that was in error. And thus it is
always wise to check the original source whenever possible.
