Dear Jim, It looks to me that Mrs. Peckham got it right if one considers
the traditional naming pattern of Marten's children.

The 1994 genealogy "The van den Berghs in America" on pages 39 and 40
gives the children of Marten by his two wives.

They say that Marten was the son of Marten Cornelis Van Buren and Maritje
Quackenbosh. Marten's first wife was Judikje, the daughter of Barent
Meindersen. Marten's second wife was Maria, the daughter of Barent
Gerritse van den Bergh and Geertruy Witbeck.

Marten Van Buren's children with Judikje (baptismal dates in Albany DCR):

1 Jan 1701 Maritje (named for paternal grandmother)
6 Sep 1702 Barent (named for maternal grandfather)
15 Jul 1705 Marten Cornelis (named for father)
13 Jun 1708 Eytje (Ida) (named for maternal grandmother?)
30 Apr 1710 Tobias (died young)
20 Apr 1712 Jannetje
13 Jun 1714 Petrus (died young)

A marriage license was issued 14 Jul 1719 between Marten Van Buuren and
Maria van den Bergh. Their children:

14 Jan 1720 Geertruy (named for maternal grandmother)
1 Oct 1721 Cornelia
26 Dec 1723 Petrus
21 Nov 1725 Johannes
6 Dec 1727 Maria
24 Oct 1731 Benjamin
22 May 1737 Tobias

Jonathan Pearson in his "Genealogies of the First Settlers of Albany",
page 116 says that the Marten Van Buren who married Maria van den Bergh
was the son of Pieter Martense Van Buren and Ariaantje Barents. This
couple did have a son named "Marten" who was baptized 28 Dec 1701.

I think rather that Pieter and Marten were brothers; I also speculate that
they married sisters. In the Albany DRC on 7 Jan 1700 "Pieter Martissen
and Ariaantje Barens" baptized their daughter "Eytje". The baptismal
sponsors were "Marten Martisse and Judickje Barens". So I think that
there is a likelihood that Ariaentje and Judith were sisters and that
their mother's name was Eytje/Ida.

One would expect that Marietje Van den Burgh, Marten's second wife, would
want to name a son after her own father -- Barent Gerritse van den Burgh.
I suggest that the reason she was prevented from doing so was because
Marten Cornelis Van Buren already had a son named Barent by his first
marriage.
