Jean,

Not really so rare. One doesn't see it too often among the NN colonists, but
it was a very popular name throughout much of Europe during the 17th-18th
centuries. You are correct that the name is Greek in origin, but the name
given many females during that time was that of an early Christian martyr,
St. Apollonia.
