I read today the research notes of ... someone ... which indicated that a Hendrick Janszen Smit, half-brother of Ensign Dirck Barentszen Smit, arrived in New Amsterdam around 1638 or 9. This Hendrick was married to an Annetje and hung himself from a tree by the "Fresh Water" in 1664.

If this is the same Hendrick Janszen Smit showing up in early NA RDC baptisms ... then was Smit his surname or only an occupation name? If these notes are bunk, then who was the Hendrick that hung himself?

Jerry
