Dear Phyllis, What is the record that gives Aeltje the surname WEBS?

I have only found one sourced reference to this couple. On page 452 of
the recent Voorhees edition of the Flatbush records it is noted that on 3
Apr 1698 "Cirach Titus" and "Aaltie Titus" had their daughter
"Geertie" baptized. The witnesses were "frans Titus" and "Marritje
Montfoort.

I believe Marritje to be Marritje Pieters Luyster, wife of Pieter Pietrsz
Montfoort.

David M. Riker in his recent "Directory..." says that Syrach Titus and
Aeltje Webs lived in Newtown, Long Island, and later in Bucks County,
PA. Riker lists their children as:

Geertje
Pieter
Sara
Francis
Cornelius
and maybe Syrach

David M. Riker says that the immigrant Pieter Corneliszen LUYSTER was
married first to one Aeltje Tyssen and that he married second about 1670
Jannetje Snediker, the widow of Reinier Wisselpenning.

On page 104 of "Long Island Source Records" we find an abstract of the
prenuptial agreement between Pieter and Jannetje, and it names Pieter's
children by Aeltje Tyssen:

"12 Jan 1670. Pieter Corneleson, husband of Aeltien Tyssen, deceased, by
whom he had issue:

Tys Pietersen [Luyster]
Gertien Pieters
Mertien Pieters
Cornelis Pieters
Willemien Pieters

According to David M. Riker the marriages of these LUYSTER children are

Mattias m. Cornelia _______
Geertje m. __________
Marritje m. Pieter Montfoort
Cornelis m. 1) Aaltje Willems 2) Sarah Catherine Nevius
Willemtje m. Gerrit Coerten

My *speculation* is that the Aaltje who married Syrach Titus was the
daughter of Geertje Luyster and her unknown (Webs????) husband. Geertje
Luyster would have named her daughter Aaltje after her own mother, and
Aaltje, in turn, named her eldest daughter "Geertje" after the child's
maternal grandmother. Then the Marretje (Luyster) Montfoort at little
"Geertje"'s baptism would have been her maternal aunt. Note that among
Aaltje (Webs????) Titus' children, "Geertje", "Pieter", and
"Cornelis" would have been named for Luyster relatives.

These are the "clues and ideas" that I have to offer :-).

Dorothy
