Tarrytown Dutch Reformed Church has records for two men named
Abraham Van Amburgh.
One was Abraham Hendricksen Van Amburgh who married Antje
Cenniff. He appears in the Kingston
DRC baptisms of their children Hendrick, Hoes #876, as "Abraa
Hendrickse" and Isaac, Hoes #993, as "Abraam Hendricksen". In
Tarrytown in 1712 at the baptism of their son Jeremias, he
appears as "Abraham Namburgh".
The other was Abraham Van Amburgh that married Maria Lent.
"Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Westchester,
NY" baptism #145, dated 19 August 1707,
Abraham Van Amborgh, and Maria his wife bpt. Esther, sp; Nathan
Bailey and Esther his wife
In baptism #157, 1 June 1708, Abram Hamburgh and Maria Lent
sponsor, and the records reference baptism #145, see above.
#157
Johannes Bos, Elisabeth his wife bpt. Cathariena, sp. Abram
Hamburgh (145), Maria Lent
A link between these men is evidenced by the fact that Abraham
Van Amborgh and wife Maria Lent are sponsoring for Nathan Bailey
and his wife Esther Cenniff, who was, I believe, the sister of
Antje Cenniff, wife of Abraham Hendrickse Van Amburgh. This
cannot be the same man, because the marriages were concurrent.
I then sent out to find Johannes Bos, and identify his wife.

The first "Johannes Bos" I found was this one, and the Van
Amburgh immediately jumped out at me.
JOHANNES BOSCH-4, (BUSH) is also found recorded Terbosch, Bos,
Terbos, Turbos, Ter Boss, Ter Bos, Ter Buss, Terboss, Bussh,
Boss, Ter
Bush, Bush, etc., meaning--"of the wood."
JOHANNES BUSH-4 was born in Fishkill, Dutchess County, N. Y. His
baptism is recorded in the Poughkeepsie, Dutch Church, his
sponsors being
"JOHANNES TER BOSCH" and "ELIZABETH
VAN AMBURGH," his paternal grand parents.
So off I betook myself to Poughkeepsie DRC records and found
11.21.1722
Johannes ter Bosch, Neeltjen van Vliet bpt. Elizabeth sp:
Johannes ter Bosch,
Elizabeth Naamburg
6.1.1725
Jacobus ter Bosch, Catrina Beeley bpt. Johannes sp: Johannes Ter

daughter of HENDRICK ARENTSEN-1 and AELTJE CLAES-2
His wife was the daughter of Hendrick Arenteen, who later seems
to have taken the names Van Amburgh, Van Namburgh and Amburgh.

6. JACOBUS-3, bp. Kingston, May 19, 1700. married, Catharina
Bailey, daughter, of Nathan Bailey and Esther Kniffen. See
Family #(100)
NOTE: While she is called Kniffen in this was was
Hester Cenniff, Antje's Cenniff Van Amburgh's sister ...
9. Catharina, bp. Tarrytown, June 1, 1708, spon. Abram Van
Amburgh & wife Maria Lent.
I felt I had found at least part of the solution to the identity
of the Abraham Hendricksen Van Amburgh family of Kingston and
Tarrytown.
However, I then went to Kingston records and found the marriage
of Aeltje Claes and Hendrick Arentsen:
Hendrick Arentsen j.m. of Amelo in Ovrtyssel and Aeltje Claes of
(New) Amsterdam in Nieunederland, widdow of Macciel Ferre both
residing here in Wiltwyck. First publication of banns 27 April,
second 4 May, third 12 May.
Can anyone think of a reason why a family with origins in
"Amelo, in the Province of Overyssel, Holland, 25 miles E.S.E.
of Zwolle, the capital of Overyssel" as it is identified in a
footnote to the Kingston marriage record, would take the surname
Van Amburgh?
Can anyone offer more details of the issue of Aeltje Claes and
Arent Hendricksen, to flesh out what I found in Kingston DRC?
Has anyone ever dealt with the problem of the identity of the
Abraham Van Amburgh that married Maria Lent?
Many thanks for any input on these questions.
Regards,
Sharilyn
