While browsing around in the Utrecht Archives site looking for a possible
family clue (some hope!) I came across an interesting inscription taken
from the wall of the Buurkerk.
Op 1 augustus 1485 stierf mr. Hugo van Hove, doctor in beide rechten,
Domkanunnik, bid voor zijn ziel.
I can cope with the first bit and the exhortation to pray for Hugo's soul,
but what about 'doctor in beiden rechten'? My guess is that he was learned
in more than one discipline, but can anyone give a more informed translation?
