Dear Cynthia and Margot, You're right, Cynthia, that it was Jan Jochemsz
CALJIER who married. According to David Riker's recent Directory, Jochem
Caljier married Magdaleen Michaels Waele, and they came to New Netherland
in 1639. Riker does not list their son Jan, but he could have been born
in the Netherlands as Margot says in 1635.
David Riker also tells us that Jan van der Hoeven and his wife Dorothy
Jans first lived in Albany and then moved to Bergen County, New Jersey. I
found the baptisms of 6 children in Albany and 2 (or 3?) in the Bergen
DRC. In the first 3 baptisms listed, the woman sponsor presented the
infant at the baptismal font:
16 Sep 1683 CornelisJurriaan Caillardt, Geertruy Cornelis
9 May 1686 JohannesJonge Jan, Maria Jans
29 Mar 1688 GeertruyJohannes Mingaal, Tryntje Rykman
20 Jan 1692 GysbertAntoni Brise, Maria Mingaal
9 Dec 1694 IsakLucas Lucasz, Marietje Bries
9 Dec 1694 JacobAlbert Rykman, Marietje Jans
25 May 1697 HendrickGerrit Juriaensen, Catreyna Gerrits (wife of
Gerrit Steynmets)
2 Apr 1700 AbrahamGerrit Gerritsen, Jr., Neisje Pieters (wife)
8 Oct 1705 GerritBeeltje Dirks, Merselis Pieterse
The birth of "a son" is noted on 7 Jan 1700. I am assuming it was
"Abraham" who was baptized that April.
"Cornelis" would have been named for the paternal grandfather. "Johannes"
would have been named for the maternal grandfather. The sole daughter was
named for the paternal grandmother.
As far as the baptismal sponsors go, "Jonge Jan" would mean "Young Jan".
He could have been Jan Jansz -- the brother of Dorothy Jans. THe
Marrietje Jans who was godmother of twin "Jacob" could have been Dorothy's
sister. She is the same individual to appear with her brother, "Jonge
Jans".
A family bible or a will of Jan Jochemsz Caljier would be a way around the
dismal fact that the early Albany DRC records are no longer extant. We
may never know the names of Dorothy Jans' siblings.
I would estimate that Dorothy Jans was born in the late 1750s. She
probably got married about 1682, and she died sometime after 1705.
