Leslie, Bob, Bruce and all,

Dominie Van der Linde was the pastor at the church at Paramus, NJ, and was
not the first pastor at the "Brick" Church. He ordained the deacons and
elders in the newly-founded church, but the first pastor was David Marinus
1774-78, followed by Peter Leydt 1789-93. So a trip to the library will
reveal whether David Marinus's name appears on the earliest baptisms.

I don't believe there were any "True Reformed" churches in Rockland other
than those in Monsey and Nanuet. It would be interesting to know at what
date the name "True" was appended to the
Brick Church's name in the film that was mentioned. The "True" Reformed
Churches were organized under a Synod in Hackensack, which was entirely
separate from the Reformed Dutch Church. They distinctly separated from the
Classis of Paramus of the RDC.

The coetus/conferentie split was definitely connected to the American
Revolution, and I recall a story from Dutchess County where one group locked
the door against the other, and forcing the other to meet under a tree!
Makes us seem rather bland people nowadays! Whether the terminology
coetus/conferentie was used in the later revival I don't know, but doubt it.
Were any Reformed churches having pastors ordained in the Netherlands after
the Revolution?

The coetus/conferentie split was between the Pietists/coetus group who were
usually Patriots who also wanted the pastors to be ordained in this country,
as opposted to the conferentie who wanted to remain under the protection of
the church in the Netherlands and were opposed to the Revolution. I do get
the impression that the Pietists would have had much in common with the
seceders of 50 plus years later, in that both were inclined to a warmer,
less formal approach to worship, and anticipated a real personal awakening
of faith, as opposed to a more formal religious approach.

It doesn't appear that the seceders of the 19th century had a political
connection. David Cole in the History of Rockland County, says, rather
poignantly (to me, at any rate) when talking about the revival of the 1820s,
"I well remember hearing people speaking of it in my boyhood, when it was
still recent, as one of God's wonder-workings among men. I regret that some
eye-witness had not written the history of that work of grace".

I am looking forward to reading Leiby's book on the Schraalenburgh church
for more information.

others are aware are the churches at Monsey and Nanuet. Yet I have a
reference to "Baptisms at the True Reformed Dutch Church of West New
Hempstead, Rockland Co., NY, transcribed 1996 by Carol Miles from the
microfilm of the church book (LDS FHC Film # 1016566)".
