Dear Michelle, For the interpretation of earlier records a researcher
needs an accurate understanding of the patronymic naming system. This
skill has a wider benefit as well since it was used by other northern
European countries. It should be emphasized, too, that names had *no*
standardized spelling. We have had some wonderul examples posted to the
list of how English-speaking clerks recorded Dutch names and how
Dutch-speaking clerks recorded English names :-). Dorothy
