A jJacob Pieterszen Van Leiden (or Leyden) married a Grietje Jan Van
Ditmarsen. Later this Jacob Pieterszen apparently also started using the surname de
Groot. But Grietje Jans also had a brother Dirck Jansen who is also referred to
sometimes as a de Groot. It seems strange that both her brother and husband
were using the surname de Groot. Was it mearly and indication that they came
from an area of the Netherlands known as Groot? Or was it a nickname indicating
that the man was larger, i.e great? Or could the name have indicated some
sort of profession?
