Who were the parents of Thomas Ellison MATTHEWS (Esq), of Matawan, NJ.?
He was b.1817, d February 16, 1903 in Matawan, NJ, husband of Mary Van Pelt.

Mary VP above was d/o James J. Van Pelt and 'Mary.'

This info is from burials in the Van Pelt burying ground (Aberdeen
Township --formerly Matawan Township, NJ). I believe that is now in
Ocean County, once part of Monmouth Co. NJ.

With thanks to G Joyson who as kindly posted the VP burials
http://www.gjoynson.com/vanpelt.htm

Ultimately I am looking for parents/lineage of one Garret
Mathes/Matthews, father of Sarah Mathes/ Matthews. Sarah was b. 1816,
Jackson NJ. Married Charles Johnson of Monmouth NJ, s/o Joseph Johnson.
They had about a dozen children, lived in Toms River, Ocean Co., NJ

In grandmother's bible records, Sarah's surname listed as 'Mathes.' In
NJ death records for the above, surname is "Mathews' --father's name
'Garret" b. NJ.

Also looking for parents of Joseph Johnson, father of Charles.

Grandma said this line was "Dutch" --but perhaps she might have meant,
"New-Amsterdammer or "New-Netherlander."

BUT one son of Charles Johnson and Sarah Mathews was named 'Garret
Wyckoff Johnson,' so there must be a close connection here in Monmouth
County to some branch of Wyckoffs.

Thanks for any help that can be given.
Liz J
