See below for some ideas. My people were in only Bergen and Essex
counties, so I know mainly about those counties, esp. for church records.

The Aquackanonk Dutch Ref. ch. records have been transcribed and
printed by Arthur C. M. Kelly. They go from 1727 to 1816.
The Second River (now Belleville) DRC bap. records are in
Vols III and IV of Genealogical Magazine of NJ.
These cover 1727 to 1794.
As part of the NJ Archives series (aka Documents Relating to the
Colonial History of the State of New Jersery) vol XXII, William
Nelson printed Marriage Records covering 1665 to 1800.
This has also been reprinted with the title of New Jersey Marriage Records.
Hackensack and Schraalenburg ch. records have been published
by the Holland Society.
The 1912 issue of the Yearbook of the Holland Society
lists other ch. records that had been published as of that date.

William Nelson's History of Paterson.
> 4. Wills
Abstracts of wills were printed in the NJ Archives:
vol 23: 1670 - 1730
vol 30: 1730 - 1750
vol 32: 1751 - 1760
(These three are available on a CDROM from Heritage Books)
vols 33 to 42 cover 1761 to 1817
You can get the complete will either on film from the LDS or
from the NJ Archives.

> 6. State archives
> 7. Newspaper archives
Also part of the NJ Archives series are several books of
"Newspaper Extracts". I don't have what years they cover, except
the one I have says 1772 - 1773. As I recall it was a relatively
narrow range of years -- say less than 50 in all.

11. Patents and Deeds
NJ Archives vol 21 has abstracts (1664 - 1703)
12. County Gen. Soc. newsletters
Some have published transriptions of primary source data.
13. Genealogical Magazine of NJ
Has articles on various family genealogies.

I have made zero use of online data-bases for my NJ research
-- but, as I said, my research was in only the 2 counties and
covered about 1680 to 1800. Instead, I used the sources I've
listed above.
I was lucky that an aunt had done a lot. And had found two books
(secondary information) that were very helpful: History of Paterson
and History of the Kip Family in America.
Those gave me a good start and a basic outline.
What I have gotten from the internet is contact with people who
helped me. In particular Lorine Schulze and Donna Ristenbatt.
Which reminds me, Donna's site may interest you. See:
http://www.ristenbatt.com/genealogy/
Early on, my way of finding resources was to go to the library and
look at what they had on the shelves.
Lastly, you might want to read an article by Kenn Stryker-Rodda,
"That Genealogical Quagmire: New Jersey" in National Genealogical
Society Quarterly vol 48 (June 1960) pp 59 - 71.
And I almost forgot -- Genealogical Encyclopedia of the Colonial
Americas by Christina K. Schaefer has a digest of what records
are available in print and on film from the LDS at the state,
county, and town level.
Regards,
Howard
