According to "The Amazing Roosevelt Family" by Karl Schriflgiesser, NY,
1942, page 375. "Whereas," the old paper in the Dutch Orphans Court Records
reads, "Janetje Thomas widow of Cleyn Classie, commonly called so, has lately
died" it goes on to say that she left property and five minor children. The
Orphanmasters qualified Tomas Hall and Pieter Stotenburgh as administrators. Tomas
Hall placed a family named Grevenraet, probably relatives of Jannetje, on the
farm to keep it cultivated and named Metje Grevenraet to care for young
Nicholas and perhaps his sisters. Metje was paid about 100 dollars a year for the
care of Nicholas. Nicholas who might well have assumed the name of one or the
other of this guardians, as some orphans did, or even of nurse Metje, preferred
his father's name. He modified it to Roosevelt."
