Another example: Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery set sail from
London on December 20, 1606, and arrived in Jamestown in April. The sailing
route from east to west across the Atlantic went almost directly south
toward the Canary Islands to catch the easterly trade winds and favorable
currents. So after only a few weeks of sailing it became quite a bit
warmer. That's the route that carried Columbus to the West Indies, rather
than our east coast.
