Sorry to clutter up the list with so many e-mails all saying the same
thing, and some in error. At the risk of being a complete bore, here's a
revision. According to the family stories of Linda Grinder and others, my
great-great-grandfather David Eakins and Thomas Eakins's grandfather
Alexander are brothers. Thomas's father Benjamin and my great-grandfather
Clem I, patriarch of Rye, are first cousins. Thomas Eakins and my
grandfather Clem II are second cousins. My dad Jesse and his brother Clem
III are Thomas Eakins's kids' third cousins. I would be a fourth cousin of
Thomas Eakins's grand-kids and a second cousin twice-removed of Thomas Eakins.
The Samuel Gross who married Cora May Eakins cannot be the Samuel David
Gross of Thomas Eakins's painting "The Gross Clinic," because that man was
70 years old when Thomas Eakins was in his thirties, according to one
on-line biography I found. However, Cora May might have been married to
Samuel Weissel Gross, S.D. Gross's son, also a well-known physician. But
would that couple have been in Keswick IA in 1897, as one Eakins board
poster has reason to believe?
I am still wondering if Clara Maria MacDowell, married to Samuel Tigert
Eakins,. the brother of my great-grandfather, was related to Susan
MacDowell, Thomas Eakins's wife. Samuel Tigert was of the generation of
Thomas Eakins's father Benjamin. However, Susan MacDowell was apparently
from a large family. Was Clara Maria a much older sister? An aunt of
Susan? I would love to figure this out.
