Hello Alan and Lists,
Alan, I refer to your note of 9th May and to our subsequent phone conversation.
As promised I went to Hampshire Record Office yesterday and found the baptism of James. It was at St. Peter and St. Paul at Fareham, being on 6th May 1810, the parents being Robert and Martha, the surname being spelt as Earwicker.
I checked burials in case he had died in childhood but you will be pleased to know that search failed!
I found no trace of any other children of that couple and it would appear that Martha was formerly Kirby, Robert Earwicker having married Martha Kirby at Portsea St. Mary, which is a Portsmouth parish, on 12th September, 1808, by banns. Both at that time were of that parish, neither signed the register and witnesses were Mary Kirby and Richard Gudge.
I also obtained baptisms yesterday of other E's from the Fareham parish, it was a parish I had not previously looked at and I think one of the fathers was a brother of Robert.
I am glad, as I said, that my hunch that Fareham might be the answer to your search was correct. Later this week when all being well I will have more time I will send you details of the children of John Earwaker and Elizabeth Palmer, plus details of his parents and his brothers and sisters; I have a lot of information on the Bishops Waltham families.
The 1770 marriage was in fact at Bishops Waltham, Curdridge did not become a parish until 1838 and was formed by taking a chunk away from Bishops Waltham.
Cheers for now Rodney Whale.
