The Guild of One Name Studies, (G.O.O.N.S), and The "Watchers" Society
I commenced my study of the surnames in 1985 and registered with the Guild
in 1989; maintaining a database plus manual files and charts. This database
now stands at almost 25,000, but being a worldwide study, only 15,000 relate
to those with Earwaker, Earwicker, Erricker + variants with UK/former
British Colonies origins.
Membership of the "Watchers " is free, but I do need to recoup expenses
towards the costs of researching original sources, postage etc. This was set
some years ago at £2 per generation, which covers details of any wills,
admons, census returns, PR entries, and all information found relating to
each of them. Obviously, I have no wish to spoil anyone's enjoyment in
tracing their ancestry themselves, so I ask all enquirers if they would like
to receive copies of what I hold, or if they merely wish to be given details
of which parish/parishes I have found their ancestors in. A few members also
send me their charts and ask me to check them against my records, and then
send them details of any extra information and/or differences in these
pedigrees.
If appropriate, I will also send names and addresses of other members who
are tracing the same branches as the enquirer.
Under the rules of the Guild, I am obliged to answer all enquiries provided
a SAE is supplied. The aims are that information gleaned is to be shared and
searches made on a reciprocal basis.
Maureen Luxton
