I have been reading the messages concerning the Thomas and John Edwards'
lines with growing interest. While I certainly don't proclaim myself to
be an expert on these families, I have noticed that three separate
families are being discussed. John Edwards (born May 1727) was the son
of Sir Thomas Nathaniel Edwards who was married to Lady Elizabeth
Isobell Downing. Three wives are given for John: Elizabeth "Polly"
Potts (b. ca 1739; m. ca 1752), Phobe Stokes, and Mary Walker..the
likely candidate would be either Polly POtts or Phobe Stokes. I good
reference for this family is "The Edwards Legacy" written by David
Edwards.
John Edwards (b. May 1727; died 3-16-1801 in Greenville, SC) was
married to Henrietta Ayers (b. ca 1728; m. May 1750 in Fauquier County,
VA) was believed to have been born in England. As far as I can
determine "no one" has been able to confirm who his parents were, but
definitely not Sir Thomas and Lady Elizabeth Isobel. This John Edwards
was my ggggg grandfather through his daughter Betty.
The Thomas Edwards who married Mary Anne McClanahan was born in
1762 in Westmoreland County, VA and died Aug 1832 in Greenville County,
SC. His parents were Thomas Edwards (son of William Edwards from
Lancaster County, Va) and Alice Sarjeant Howell (daughter of John and
Mary Sarjeant from Richmond County, VA). This Thomas and Mary Anne were
my ggg grandparents through their son Francis (named after Thomas's g
grandmother).
The families of John and Henrietta Edwards and Thomas and Mary Anne
Edwards were not united until my grandparents wed ca 1900 in Spartanburg
County, SC. John and Thomas were friends and neighbors as stated in the
Will of John Edwards.
Don't know if this helps or confuses the issue, but hope it helps.
