This is a continuation of a series on abstracts of pension records on file in
the National Archives in Washington, DC. They are taken from THE EDWARDS
JOURNAL Vol.1, No. 4 Oct-Dec, 1983.
HENRY EDWARDS
S45839 Service: North Carolina Rank: Private
Application for pension made by veteran on 1 Jan 1833 at which time he
was a resident of Columbia Co., Florida. He gave his age as 71 years.
He declared that he resided in Duplin Co., NC, when he enlisted about
1777. He served as a private in the North Carolina troops as follows: He
served eight months in 1777 in Capt Grimes Company in Col. Mathews' Regiment,
later in the same year he served three months in Capt Isham Sheffield's
Company, Col. Kenyon's Regiment. In 1781 he served five months in a troop of
cavalry under Capt James Golaspi and was in a skirmish at Sugar Loaf.
He has lived since the Revolutionary War in Effingham Co., GA and Telfair
Co., GA, and he now resides in Columbia Co., Florida Territory.
He mentioned Abel G. Lopar of Columbia Co., Territory of Florida who
lived in GA in the same neighborhood as him and who was aware of the
destruction of his (Henry's) records.
William Edwards of Effingham Co., GA, is also mentioned as a witness to
his having served in the army.
He died 15 Nov 1837 leaving children (no names given). No mention was
made of a wife. No other family data was in the file.
Certificate No. 6370 was issued 28 Feb 1833 under the Act of June 7,
1832, at $50.00 per annum from March 4, 1831.
ISAAC EDWARDS
W25558 Service: Connecticut Rank: Private
Application for pension made by veteran on 5 Sep 1832 at which time he
was a resident of Corinth, Saratoga Co., NY. He gave his age as 68 years. He
declared that he was born on 29 Jun 1764 in town of Waterbury, Litchfield Co,
CT.
He entered the service in March 1781 for one year as a volunteer soldier
in the Infantry State Troops of Connecticut, raised for the defense of the
Post of Horse Neck. His enlistment commenced on March 1, 1781, and ended
March 1, 1782. He served under Capt. Nathaniel Edwards, his father, who died
in March 1825.
He stated that he resided in the town of Watertown, Connecticut, with his
family until January 1795 when he removed to the town of Greenfield, Saratoga
Co., NY, wherehe resided until the spring of 1809 when he moved toHadley, now
Corinth, in Saratoga County, a distancefrom his former residence of nearly two
miles.
Certificate No. 8200 was issued 13 Mar 1833 under the Act of June 7,
1832, at $40 per annum from March 4, 1831.
Application for a widow's pension was made by Mary Edwards on 30 May 1854
at which time she was a resident of Malta, Saratoga Co., NY. She declared
that she was the widow of Isaac Edwards who was a Revolutionary soldier and a
U S Pensioner under theAct of Congress June 7, 1832. She gave her age as 75
years.
She declared that she married Isaac Edwards on 22May 1820 in Corinth, NY,
and that her name before the marriage was Mary Avery. She was married by
Washington Chapman, J.P.
She declared that her husband, Isaac, died 18 Feb 1848 at his residence
in the town of Greenfield, Saratoga Co., NY, of an inflammation of the lungs
in the 84th year of his life.
On 31 Jul 1854 Abigail Chapman of Saratoga Co., NY, declared that she was
present at the time of the marriage of Isaac Edwards with Mary Avery. It took
place at Corinth, Saratoga Co., NY, on 20 May 1826. The marriage was
performed by deponent's husband, Washington Chapman (dec'd).
In 1854, a son, James Edwards, who was a resident of Albany, NY, wrote
that Mr. Isaac Edwards was his father and that Mrs. Mary Edwards was his
father's second wife. (The record does not show if James was the son of the
first or second wife.) The name of the first wife was not given.
Certificate No. 4496 was issued 9 Sep1854 under the Act of Feb. 3, 1853,
at $40 per annum from Feb 3 1853, to Mary Edwards.
