Subject: [EDWARDS-L] PLEASE READ !! Updated Message from the EDWARDS Maillist moderator
Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 00:30:02 -0500

Welcome to the EDWARDS mailing list!

I have set a robot on my account to automatically send this message
on the first day of the month to confirm that you are subscribed to
this maillist, and as a reference guide if you have questions about
this list. Please refer to this guide if you encounter problems, and
I will try to update it as needed. If this guide does not help, try
the rootsweb page at http://www.rootsweb.com, as a last resort, I can
be reached at (I receive 250+ messages a day, so
it may take it awhile).

Quick Guidelines for mailing lists:

1. PLEASE check the spelling and address when subscribing or unsubscribing !!
2. If you get this message, YOU ARE SUBSCRIBED. Please do not try to
resubscribe, it does not do anything but generate mail for me. PLEASE,
do not send "Test Messages", this will be viewed as spam on this list.
3. Do not send spam e-mail messages to mailing lists.
4. Do not send attachments (attached files) of any sort to mailing
lists. This includes URL shortcuts, v-cards, GEDCOM files,
zipped files, and any other type of attachment.
5. Do not forward virus hoaxes or chain letters to mailing lists.
6. Do not use HTML or RTF (rich text format) in messages sent to
mailing lists.
7. Do not cross-post messages to multiple mailing lists on the
"To:" line or the "Cc:" line of the e-mail message.
8. Do not send e-mail messages to mailing lists for which the topic
is inappropriate. (GENEALOGY POSTS ONLY PLEASE !!!)
9. Do not send a message ONLY containing a URL. It does not matter
if this is yours or someone else's. This list is NOT to be used
to get 'hits' for a webpage. If you show genealogy information,
and wish to credit the source, or put a tagline with your page,
that's fine.
10. Do not flame other members of the mailing list.
11. Be nice to one another.
12. PLEASE SHARE your information and questions about the EDWARDS
surname. Maybe someone out there can help you with that "brick wall".

This maillist moderator reserves the right to become a benelovent
dictator, please do not push me in that direction !!!

You are currently subscribed in "mail mode", which means that you will
receive every posting made to EDWARDS as a separate e-mail, or you
are subscribed in "digest mode", which means that you will receive many
messages in one e-mail.

1. How to unsubscribe. Send a message to

(if you are current in mail mode)

(if you are current in digest mode)

that contains (in the body of the message) the command

unsubscribe

and NO ADDITIONAL TEXT !!

2. If you'd like to post a message so everyone on the mailing
list receives it, just send it to . It
will then be sent on to everyone in both mail and digest mode.
You don't need to send it explicitly to both. PLEASE DO NOT USE
or
to send posts, they will not go to the maillist !!

3. How to subscribe. Whatever you did worked, or you'd not be getting
this message. But for future reference (for instance, if your
subscription is cancelled for whatever reason and you want to
resubscribe), just send the command "subscribe" to
(mail mode) or
(digest mode).

4. How to change to modes (mail->digest or digest->mail), there are
two steps. First, send the command "unsubscribe" to discontinue your
current mode. Second, send the command "subscribe" to start receiving
your new mode.

5. How to change to NOMAIL mode. There is no formal NOMAIL mode.
All you have to do is follow the directions above and unsubscribe
when you want the messages to stop, and then when you want them
to start again, simply subscribe again.

6. PLEASE !!! Do not respond to the list with PERSONAL responses.
I do not mind if your messages are a response will have the potiental
to help someone else, that is fine. I DO NOT want a message asking
how the kids are, and if the cake recipe worked, Happy Father's Day,
Merry Christmas, or any other NON-GENEALOGY related postings. Instead
of sending a "test message", send a query instead !! AND PLEASE !!!,
DO NOT send "web page announcements" to the list simply to advertise
your OWN pages or commerical sites. This is NOT a forum to 'get more hits'
for your page.

7. Please be careful with mail addresses. Many mail addresses will
contain extra information. For example, my ISP (pagesz.net) can have
mail addresses mailhost.pagesz.net or nina.pagesz.net, as well as
pagesz.net for an address. If I subscribe with nina.pagesz.net, and
then try to unsubscribe with mailhost.pagesz.net, the mail "robot" that
handles subscriptions will tell me that I am not a subscriber, even
though I get messages.

A good way to tell is to look at the address you sent out when you
subscribed, or the last message you posted to the list. The address that
works for these is the address the "robot" recognizes for you. If you
try to post, and your posting is not mailed back to you, the problem is
more that likely because the addresses do not match (or you sent a post to
or ).

This has become a big problem. Primarily because these addresses can
change on the whim of your ISP, and you probably won't recognize the
fact. Also, many folks change mail programs, and the address they used
is different in their setup.

8. If you are getting multiple postings, a few things to consider. If
there are only a few, it may be that the sender has accidently double
clicked the send button, and two messages were sent from them. Secondly,
a sender may have sent the same message to multiple maillists. PLEASE
DO NOT MULTIPLE POST MAILLISTS WITH THIS LIST (unless there is a compelling
reason) !!! Finally, you may have a duplicate address (as mentioned above
in the maillist database. Not only could you have two subscriptions from
the same ISP, but if you use a mail forwarding service (such as Geocities),
the mail may be coming through that account.
