Subject: [EFSS] Thomas Phillips of Prince George Co, Va, Craven Co, NC & Dobbs/Lenoir Co NC
Date: Sun, 09 Apr 2000 13:33:28 -0400
This family is one of my "pets" but have far more holes in the line than
answers because of the burned records in Old Dobbs now Lenoir Co, NC. Any
information on his ancestors or descendants would be appreciated.
Thomas Phillips - bc l700 - d l743 in Craven County, N.C. with a Will - md
Isabelle who may have been the daughter of John Lanthrope of Prince George
County, Va. who had a Will in l7l8. bc l705-l7l0 - d after l767 in Craven
County, N.C. Thomas may have had a brother, John, as there are records of a
John in both the Parish records and land records on 2nd Swamp in PG County.
Mary Jane Phillips Matz has actually been to this location which is still
in the ownership of some of John's descendants.
RECORDS OF BRISTOL PARISH, VA
John son of Thomas and Isabelle Phillips born 8 May l726
Mason son of Thomas and Isabelle Phillips born 23 July l728
Mary daughter of Thomas and Isabelle Philllips born 9 March l730

In addition to the above children we know Thomas and Isabell also had
children, Thomas Jr, Mark, and William as evidence by his will.

witness whereof sealed with my Seal the twenty second day of June in the
year of our Lord l743.
Thomas (signed with a Mark) Phillips
Witness
Robt. (can't read last name could be Patrick)
Henry Summerland
The Will was proven in Court by Henry Summerland on 22 Day of December l743.
Thomas appears to have applied for a land Patent but it was not approved
until 1746 in Isabelle's name. They lived in that area of Craven Co, NC
called Eagle Swamp which was later placed in Lenoir Co about 1807. The
oldest son John appears to have inherited the original land patent and then
added to it. The son Thomas also appears to have lived next door but the
other sons lived slightly to the west in that area that became Johnston Co
in 1746, Dobbs Co several years later and Lenoir County in 1791. There are
no records in this area from 1746 to 1880.
Like most of my families, they moved from burned county to burned county.
Thank you.
Martha
