Subject: [EFSS] PORTER, Thomas 1734-1799 Fauquier Co., Va. m. Sarah "Sally" WEAVER
Date: Wed, 1 May 2002 00:38:57 EDT

Thomas PORTER's wife Sarah "Sally" WEAVER was dropped from a UFO! Thomas'
brother Samuel PORTER m. an Evelyn "Eva" WEAVER, daughter of Tilman WEAVER of
Germanna. Nowhere can I find Sarah "Sally".
I also cannot find parents for Samuel and Thomas.

I'm descended through Thomas' youngest son--Edwin PORTER m. Polly MAUZY.
The following is what I have so far on Thomas PORTER.

Served as a sargent and a captain in the 2nd Virginia Regt. under Col.
TAYLOR. DAR Vol. 162 pg 215.

According to his grandson's obit.(wm. b. 1809) Thomas had 3 sons at Yorktown
at the time of the surrender of Cornwallis.

Just curious here. Looked over the GenForum messages more closely and
see that you state that Thomas died in Campbell Co. KY. Are you sure of
that? His will, dated 10 May 1799, was recorded in Fauquier Co. VA on 24
Jun 1799. Abstract doesn't mention he is in another place. With the little
time between the will date and its filing, it seems improbable, though
possible. If he was out of the state, it would have been filed in Fauquier
since
he had lands there. (Final division was 24 Feb 1800). Sons William, Thomas
and Edwin were executors. There seem to have been some complaints and
suits drawn against them, mostly from out of state siblings. In one of these,

Jane Porter of Mason Co. KY and widow of John, gave her power of attorney
to her B-I-L Charles Porter of Bourbon Co. KY to demand Thomas' estate
division. This was filed in Fauquier. There were others. Interesting, but not

uncommon where out-of-state interests are concerned. In Jane's case, she
probably needed funds for young children.

One of Thomas' brothers was Samuel. The two of them bought land together
in Fauquier in 1765. Prior to that Thomas had sold some land in 1761.
Thomas was present on the surviving 1759 tax list of Thomas Marshall which
indicates he was living around the Licking Run area in Fauquier. He was the
only Porter on that particular list (relatively small area) and no tithables
listed
with him. In all likelihood, he was married by that time.

William, Thomas, and Edwin made oath and with Samuel Porter and Martin
Porter, their security in bond for $10,000, granted cert. for obtaining
probate.

There you have it. In addition, Thomas Porter voted in Fauquier 1799,
probably one of his last acts. He definitly was not in Campbell Co. KY.

Samuel appears to be a brother. Possibly he is the son of Samuel and Eve
Porter. Martin is definitely the son of Samuel Sr. There may have been other
siblings in addition to Thomas and Samuel.

The will of Tilman Weaver (Fauquier Will Book 1, page 13) probated Mar
1760 mentions his daughter Eve Porter and his son-in-law Samuel Porter.
This is the same Samuel Porter that purchased land along with Thomas
Porter in 1765 in Fauquier.

This Tilman Weaver didn't have a daughter Sarah, but I would suggest an
association somewhere - unless this is another inaccuracy in the DAR app.

Another major interesting titbit you are going to want to follow up on: This
Samuel Porter (unquestionably of the same family as your Thomas Porter)
sold land to a William Porter which Samuel and Eve initially had purchased
of Denis (sic) Conyers. This is a surname which connects back to the Porter
family in Overwharton Parish!!!!

If I'm not mistaken, the Weaver family had its roots in old Germania. Allied
families seem to include many Germania surnames. Tilman's will mentions
his land in Culpeper. There were Porters in Culpeper. A possible link may be
there. Point is that the Isle of Wight may be a generation too early for
Thomas, if accurate at all.

13. DAR supplemental on Thomas Porter submitted by Annie Ingram. Mrs. Ingram,
four generations removed from Thomas Porter, was national number
101836. She includes transcriptions of documents submitted for the land
warrant, which she found at the Virginia State Archives. One of the
documents submitted for the land warrant is signed by two justices of
the peace from Wilkes Co GA, place of death of Sarah (Weaver) Porter.
Why, since Thomas Porter died first? Mrs Ingram also references a mss
entitled “Burton-Weaver & Scott Genealogy” and a book by William Manzy
entitled Manzy Family, but does not state their location

*[13] says Isle of Wight Co VA.
** [13] says Campbell Co VA but 10 has Thomas Porter’s death as Campbell Co
KY, which seems more likely, since Campbell Co KY was taken from Mason
County KY, where son John Porter lived. If 13 is mistaken about this in
relation to Thomas Porter’s death, it may be mistaken in the same way in
saying the marriage took place at Campbell Co VA, so I have placed iT in
Campbell Co KY until I have further information.

Descendant of King Henry, III and King Edward, III--accepted by DAR.
