"On December 10, 1775, Captain Wallace of the British frigate, H. M. S. Rose,
burned part of Conanicut. In retaliation, Captain Eldred planted a gun
between two rocks on the highland near his house overlooking the the water
and fired on the british who lay off shore; he apparently harassed them on a
number of occasions, much to their irritation, but they never caught him. A

reads "Revolutionary Soldier, John Eldred, 1775-1783."
