According to 'Victorian Banbury' by Barrie Trinder (published by Banbury
Historical Society);-
"In the 17th & 18th centuries a Catholic presence in the district had been
maintained by the Holman family of Warkworth Castle. There were some
Catholics in Banbury by 1798 when a baptismal register was begun, & in 1802
an emigre French priest, Pierre Julien Hersent, settled in High Street. In
1804 he returned to Warkworth, & after the demolition of the Castle in 1806
built a chapel in Overthorpe which served local Catholics until he began to
hold meetings on private premises in Banbury. He was joined in 1830 by Fr.
Joseph Fox, who took charge of the congregation after his death in 1833, &
acquired land for a church. Fox died in 1835 by which time the crypt was
vaulted & parts of the walls erected."
The source quoted for the above is A.G. Wall, "St John's Church, Banbury"
(1938) pp.11-13
There is no mention of whether there would be any surviving records. I'm
sorry I don't know how you would even find this out.
