Hello, Jan - I'm not knowledgeable, but I did find the following facts
yesterday while using an online database available to patrons of my local
library. By 1851 Liverpool was the leading emigration port for all of
Europe. Major contributing factors appear to be Liverpool's rail links with
east-coast ports (such as Hull) plus the willingness of Liverpool companies
to engage in "bitter price wars". British as well as European emigrants
would have benefited from the resulting cheap fares. - Frances
