In Parsons St, there is a building with a bust on the first floor outside. It
is a photo developers, but it would most likely have been a pub at some time.
Based on the dress, I think the bust is Wm. Shakespeare or some other
dignitary of that era. Maybe someone can shed some light on what it was once called.
Parsons St was once, I am told, the "Red Light" district of Banbury. Its
previous name would seem to support that. A Red Light area usually indicates a
large number of hostelries close by. Currently there are four pubs in the street
which is barely 100 yards long. At least three of them are very old, and it is
probably the oldest part of Banbury that still survives.
Please do not accept these observations as historical in any way. They are
based on my limited knowledge and my own drawn conclusions. But, at least it
adds a bit of spice the chat!!
Still waiting to exchange contracts. Tomorrow I HOPE!!!!!!!!
