Just a thought on 144 Warwick Road; there should be in the deeds office in
Banbury documentation as to who owned the house during those years. If it
was just a person rather than an organisation, it would be worth finding out
if they were affiliated with an organisation. The reason I say this, it was
typical for the Quakers to do something to protect the unwed mothers and
give them a place to live - much the same for the elderly or infirm, a
reason for so many births and deaths.
I don't know about Oxfordshire but in Wiltshire during those years if a
girl/woman was pregnant & the family could neither care nor want to care for
them, they were put into mental hospitals, the mother remained there and the
baby sent to orphanages. The reason I know this is because in the mid 50's I
started my nurses training at Savernake Hospital, and the maids at the
hospital were all these women who this had happened to. They were being
taught to work and live in the real world they were closely monitored by
Matron and taught how to manage their money and in general live and work in
a normal society. Each usually took about 2 years before they could go out
on their own. The county was releasing all these women and apparently it was
in the hundreds, but doing it in a way for them to adapt and succeed in the
real world. The reason I have told you this is maybe this house was there to
prevent the same thing happening to the Banburyshire girls/women.

Geoff,
Thank you for your thoughts. Barry and I both have an interest in 144
Warwick Rd. and must have both had the idea of asking the list for help at
the same time. Barry was born at 140 Warwick Rd. his parents living at this
address from the early 1930's. 144 was a couple of doors away. The
workhouse was situated further up the Warwick Rd. and the workhouse and 144
Warwick Rd. were both standing 'independently' in my memory.
I do wonder if it may have been a house owned by the workhouse maybe but
considering the size of the old Neithrop/workhouse this does not seem
likely. I think I will have to try and access the electoral registers at
CDC offices, don't know how possible this is !
It seems alot of births took place at 144 Warwick Rd. !!

Hi Denise,
I was just about to reply to Barry when I saw that you also had a query
about 144 Warwick Road! According to http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ the
Banbury Union workhouse "was built in 1835 at a site on the north side of
Warwick Road at Neithrop". I have tried to find the exact address from
census records but they give nothing more specific than just "Warwick Road".
However a google on 144 Warwick Road, Banbury will reveal a number of other
researchers who also discovered births at that address so I suspect that the
union workhouse may be the answer.
The fact that 144 Warwick road is now an ordinary detached house may be
because the workhouse was demolished in the 1980s.
Hope that helps,
Geoff P.

I wonder if this address is familiar to any Listers - it appears that 144
Warwick Rd. may have been a 'home' for un-married mothers in the early
1900's. I have discovered a couple of un-related illegitimate births, one
in 1905 and one in 1910, both Middleton Cheney mothers. Does anyone know
anything, I have tried Kelly's directory online to see who lived here but
nothing helpful. The electoral rolls are not easily viewed. I am intrigued
to find out a little more. Any help would be appreciated.
