Subject: [BC Diaspora] Welcome New Listers 13 October - please save!

Welcome, folks - this is the standard Listmom's spiel: I post a similar one to all the lists I look after every month. Please take the time to read it, even if you're an old hand at Internet Genealogy. It's a good idea to save it for future reference, too.

The purpose of a list such as this is the free sharing of information and the establishment of friendly contact between like-minded people. This is a small list (40-odd members at last count) so don't be shy - list your interests regularly and keep us posted as to your progress on those brick walls. Occasional jokes are fine, as long as they have at least a modicum of genealogical content! Otherwise, please restrict your postings to genealogical matters with relevance to the subject matter of this list: ie, families who left the Black Country for other counties in search of work in the mid to late C19. Stories about coal mining and other trades engaged in by our ancestors are especially welcome.

Remember that the lists are archived, so it's probably not a good idea to
post sensitive personal info: some experts recommend that you never give
your mother's maiden name and your full date of birth in the same posting.

Please DO NOT POST virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, personal
messages etc. Please note also that attachments cannot be sent through
mailing lists - the automated system gets rid of them.

Please use the standard internet genealogy protocol of CAPITAL letters for
all SURNAMES. Avoid using all caps for other proper nouns, such as given
names or place names, as this can cause confusion. Please note that it's
considered rude to type in all capitals: it means you are angry and
shouting!

The list is set so that when you hit the reply button, your post will go to the original sender of the message, not to the list. (This is to save the embarrassment of a dinner invitation being inadvertently offered to the list at large!) If you want to share your posting with all listers, make sure it is addressed to

Try to make the heading of your post reflect its content. The heading 'Re:
BCDiaspora-D# 19' isn't very informative. (This kind of heading, BTW,
usually results from hitting reply to a Digest: if you do this, make sure
you delete all the old posts before you send it! Change the subject line to something that will tell your fellow researchers what you want to discuss.)

If you're going on vacation, it's not a bad idea to unsub before you leave,
so as not to clog up your mail box. To unsubscribe from L-mode, send a
message to

that contains in the body of the message the command

and no other text.

To unsubscribe from Digest mode, send the message to
instead.

And *please*, do remember: if you change your e-mail address, unsub from the
old one and re-sub under the new one! If you are unable to successfully
