Dear Joan,
you may well be right about the status of Charles COOK, no Cooks
appearing in the Directory for Foulmire (I was hoping he was also a
farmer). The Directory does not give streets for the pubs (they would
have been very obvious at that time anyway) but if the pubs still exist
they are findable, however only one pub (The Chequers, High Street,
*Fowlmere* SG8 7SR 01763 208369) is marked on the modern O.S. map, near
the corner of Rectory Lane and High Street.
However, Marston's the Brewers bought The Swan House in 1998 and
'parachuted' a succession of landlords in but alas, in May 2003 it was
boarded up.
The Black Horse was allowed to become a private house against the wishes
of the locals.
For a street map go to www.multimap.com/map/, enter Great Britain in
the 'country' box and Fowlmere in the 'GB place' box. Set the scale at
1:25000 for the position of the pub, then 1:5000 for street names.
Must close hurriedly as we're in the middle of a thunderstorm.
Regards, David
