I am currently researching John (aka Thomas) MATTHEWS born Oxford 1826. I have very little on his time in Oxford, other than the fact he might have come from the Hamel in the St Thomas parish of Oxford, (If I am correct in this assumption, his father was a boatman, born Birmingham circa 1792).

What I do know is that by 1851 he is living at 23 Leybourne Road Camden employed as Porter at Pickfords. In 1861 he is living at 1 Georgina Terrace, Mile End Old Town with wife Elizabeth and four children Thomas, Mary, John, Julia and Sarah Anne There is no trace of him or his family in 1871. (Something I would dearly love to find as with the exception of Thomas I am having real difficulty finding the rest of the family).

However, by 1881 he appears to have remarried and is living at 136 Rhodeswell Road, Limehouse with wife Mary Anne and daughter Susannah, rest of the family have disappeared. By 1891 John, Mary Anne and Susannah are living in Mile End Old Town Workhouse.

Susannah's marriage certificate dated August 2 1897 tells me that John had died by 1897. she and her mother were living at 63 Copenhagen place. Poplar, London

His occupation, from 1861 onwards, was that of a Bargeman /Boatman on the Regents Canal and a brief spell as a horsekeeper . If you have any links to this family or any info with regards to them or indeed . THOMAS, CORDERY and HEFFORD

I would love to hear from you.

Steve
