Hi Bill

Seeing your posting on the Wirral mailing list this morning reminded me that
I "owe" you a reply to a couple of e-mails you sent me over a week ago.

You asked whether there are any publications in the Cheshire area where
people interested in genealogy can post listings so that others can see
them. The only one I know of (not living within 100 miles of Cheshire
myself, of course) is the Cheshire Ancestor, the quarterly magazine issued
free to members of the Family History Society of Cheshire. This has a
supplement showing Members' Interests registered within the previous three
months, and I have been busy for the last week putting all the information
from my back issues into a spread-sheet - making myself a data-base, as it
were. I believe there's also a free CD of members' Interests available from
the FHSC which I intend to send off for as soon as I can find the details of
the address.
Once my data-base is complete I should be able to give you details of anyone
else who has expressed an interest in the HUGHES name in the Hoylake area.

As regards your experience with Russel DODD I should think his seeming
indifference to genealogy merely indicates that he has other things to do at
the present time. I'm afraid I was rather guilty of this myself for 20
years, during which two of my younger brothers desperately tried to get me
interested in family history. But until I retired from work I just didn't
have the time or energy for it - there were simply so many
other things requiring my attention. The catalyst with me was buying a
computer early in 2001 - something which I'd always sworn I'd never do!
I will, however, try to think of a diplomatic way of approaching Sue DODD to
see if we can establish a useful link there.

As regards other members of our family tree who are interested in our
genealogy, it depends on what you mean by the second "our". There are quite
a few people scattered about the world who have Peter JONES & Elizabeth
HUGHES in their tree as xgreat-grandparents, but the only one I know of with
HUGHES's later than Elizabeth is Yvonne PURDY, who I thought you were
already in touch with. 'Von has a line down from Richard HUGHES (b1774),
brother to your Joseph (1782).

You and I have something else in common, by the way. My great great great
grandfather William EVANS owned a beerhouse in Liscard called the Mount
Tavern, and his son (my great great grandfather) John EVANS owned the Little
Brighton Inn in the same place. My great grandfather William
Evans was born in the Little Brighton in 1830 and it's still there to this
day - I had a pint of
beer in there a couple of months ago!

Will talk again soon.

Your cousin Gordon
