Date: Wed, 05 Nov 2003 08:20:56 -0800
from the Chronicles of Celtic Folk Customs by Brian Day....
CELTIC This night commemorates deliverance from Guy Fawkes'
unsuccessful attempt to carry out Robert Catesby's plot to blow up with
gunpowder the King, House of Lords and House of Commons this day in
1605. It has inherited some features of Hallowe'en, banned during the
Reformatin, particularly the use of fires, torches or burning of tar
barrels to drive out evil and the burning of an effigy, originally a
witch. The custom was taken into the Welsh marches and Cornwall by the
English.
