Frank, many thanks for all the great information! I didn't know Clara
lost two sons in WWI. My uncle James Bassett recently sent me a copy of
the death certificate of John Charles Bassett. He died of his wounds on
30/9/15 in France aged 19. He arrived in France on 13/7/15. His grave
reference is I.C.25 Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge,
West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. He was a private (S.R 6739) with the 4th
Battalion, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment).

Arthur was my Grandfather. I believe Stanley was the name of one of the
other brothers. When my grandmother (Mabel Gould) was alive she told me
Arthur's youngest brother was Richard and that he died eating a
sausage?? She also told me Clara was a red head and died of cancer in
1905 when Arthur was 2yrs old.

I have a photo of Clara and one taken at Arthur's wedding which includes
John Charles Bassett. If you are interest I'll send you a copy.
Apparently John Charles enjoyed eating raw onions and strong
peppermints. I remember my grandfather being fond of peppermints. Sorry
if this is boring. I'd love to hear more about the Polkinghorne side.
It's quite an unusual name.

I believe John Charles' father was Richard Bassett. The 1891 Census has
him living at Rosewin with his wife Rebecca (nee Reynolds) and son
Jethro.

Regards,
Mark.

I have Clara was born 14 Feb 1862 in St. Columb Major. She is not
listed in the church records of SCMa. The 1891 Census says she was born

in Pool. She married Charles (John in 1891 census) Bassett and lived in
the Holborn and Willesden sections of London. She died 14 Apr 1906 age
42?? while living at 51 Burrard Road, Fortune Green, Hampstead, London.
She was interred in Grave D at the Hampstead Cemetery. Her children
were Elizabeth (b. 1889), Edith, Ethel, Arthur, Bessie, and three other
sons, two of whom died in WWI. The surviving children were living in
London in 1931. Charles remarried and was alive in 1932.
Clara had at least 6 siblings including my grandfather, William Henry
Francis Polkinghorne who moved to Canada and later the US. At least one

other sibling was born in Pool. I have additional information on the
Polkinghorne side of our family.
