Subject: Morland - a 'Thankful Village'?
Date: Sun, 6 Jun 2004 20:53:44 +0100

After the Great War, some villages were [unofficially] designated 'Thankful villages' - these were places where all the men who served in the armed forces returned. I have been told that the church at Morland, south-east of Penrith, has a plaque, or memorial of some sort, giving thanks that all the men came back safely. Other sources suggest that one man, Stephen Hayhurst, died during the war, but it is possible he might have been resident elsewhere by that time.

Is there anyone familiar with Morland who can confirm that a memorial of this type exists in the Church?

Thanks and best wishes,

Sue
