Hi,

I have just joined this list in the hope that I might find someone who may
be able to help with a mystery I am trying to solve. I am doing this
research for a family friend.

I am trying to find out what happened to Albert Ernest WHITTAKER who was
born in Aston, Birmingham in 1876. In 1901 he married Ellen (Nellie) PRESTON
(born c1882) and they were still living in Birmingham in 1907.

The family story is that he was killed in France in WW1, but after checking
various databases (CWGC, C4 War Memorials, Soldiers who died in WW1 and the
National Roll for Soldiers in WW1) I have been unable to identify him with
certainty, although I have excluded most of them.

It is believed that at the time of WW1 the family had moved to the
Whitehaven area and I have found details of an Albert WHITTAKER on the War
Memorial at Distington, but details from Find My Past state that he was
killed in 1915 at Gallipoli. His death certificate states that he was aged
30, whereas I was expecting him to be aged c39.

However, there is another clue from the GRO INDEX, I have details of a
marriage in the June Qtr of 1919 for Whitehaven between Ellen WHITTAKER and
William M. CHESTER. This is followed by a birth in the March Qtr of 1921 in
Whitehaven of Frederick J. CHESTER, where the mother's maiden name is
recorded as PRESTON - this appears to be too much of a coincidence.

I have been told that Ellen died around 1923/24 and again from the GRO
INDEX, I have found an entry for an Ellen CHESTER in Whitehaven in the March
Qtr of 1924, aged 41. This seems to be the correct age for the Ellen born in
Birmingham.

So, I was wondering if there is anybody with connections to or knowledge of
this family. If so, I would be very pleased to hear from you.
