I recall when attending Dorset Quarter Sessions a little over 50 years ago, a
prisoner put a question to a DEAF female witness.

The result was that the witness could not hear and both counsel and chairman
repeated the question in very loud tones.

Alas! Still the question did not register, but ultimately one of the
magistrates moved to the witness box and SHOUTED the question into her ear.

This time the witness replied "No Sir."

The question was: "Did you hear anything unusual on the night in question?"
