I'm truly sorry if my question gave offence, but I thought that the subject
was an interesting one which, in this day and age, could be discussed freely.

I've always thought of prostitution, that is in the sense of there being
areas where the women work and their taking steps to make their occupation
clear to male clients, was a city phenomenon. I was therefore surprised to
discover that there was, apparently, a 'red light' district in 19th century
Dorchester.

But on the main point, may I ask the owner of this list for a verdict? If
the verdict is that this subject mustn't be mentioned, then I'll shut up.

However, in that case, I will expect to hear an ironic chuckle from the
ghost of Thomas Hardy - he'll be delighted to know that he still has the
power to shock people.
