I have recently been given a book entitled "The National Roll of the Great
War 1914-1918, section iv Southampton". It covers the area I live now, and
says "contained within the pages of this volume will be found the names and
records of those who helped to secure victory for the Empire during the Great
War of 1914-1918". Each entry gives the name , rank, regiment, and then a
potted history of the man's career in the services, and ends with his
address.
There is no indication of whether this includes everybody who served - it
seems unlikely. The way the entries read suggests that they were written by
the families of those listed. Nor is there any indication of whether the
series covered the whole country.
There are 7148 entries in this book; if the whole population that served in
the war was covered, that suggests there would need to be several hundred
volumes!
Does anybody know if there was a volume covering Durham and/or Sunderland,
and if so where this might be available?
Adrian
