Hi Sue,

I think it would be a fairly normal occurrence for that to happen. It
regularises a situation when a stranger (i.e. the nosy enumerator) comes
calling. I've certainly got it happening in my family.

Hiya wonder if any of you can help me please. Did it happen very often that
illigimate children (born in 1856 time) may have used their birth name then
when their mother married they suddenly just changed their surname to that
of their step-father. Would it be acceptable to do that?

I have my Great Great Grandfather on Census sheets from aged 25yrs (when he
had obviously married and left the family home) but could not find him at
all or who his parents were on earlier census (aged 5 and 15). I now think
that is the reason why! I've been looking for the wrong birth and wrong
name! Did this happen?

Hope you can understand this confusing message - and thank you for reading
it.

Regards
Sue
