Dear Group
I know nothing of Yorkshire save that it is in England what Cities or
Archives are in this area of Yorkshire which I may correspond with to find
information or someone to help me. The family I am seeking information on is
the OATES family. James the main ancestor was an attorney in the colony of
North Carolina his first court appearence was when court was held in the
house of the Deputy Governor Thomas Harve in 1696. He was married to Mrs.
Elizabeth Evans by Thomas Harve 11/Sep/1694.
He supposedly had a signet ring . I have not seen it, but only read about
it. His will dated 1703, has a place which had wax on it like what a signet
ring may make. I only have xeroxed copy. His great-grandson James also has a
place on his will in 1815, similiar to the mark made by a signet ring in
wax. Again I only have a copy. James OATES Sr. supposedly had a tea set with
the family arms on it, but I have not seen a photo of this. It is merely
described in two secondary sources I have seen. If anyone could direct to
where I might find Baptismal records for 1660, or other records which may
help me.
