Helen,

My great grandfather, John Christopher COX, worked for Dorman & Long, as did
his sons Fred COX and John COX.

As you may know, Dorman & Long make bridges, including the Tyne, Golden Gate
& Sydney Harbour bridges, as well as the rebuilding of the Menai Bridge
originally built by Thomas Telford.

Fred COX drove a shunting engine outside, so he was a "worker". He lived
from about 1900 to 1960.

John COX was about 6 ft 4 inches tall, & his wife Beattie "came up to his
waistcoat pocket". They had about 10 children. He was Transport Manager.
This was an indoor job & made him "management".
My father was born in Dormanstown, in 1927, which was the town built by
Dorman & Long for their workers. His mother was Elsie COX, who was sister to
John & Fred.

Have you tried the 1901 census on http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ for more
information about your GIBSONs? I found Henry GIBSON aged 6 in Gateshead,
but no Harry in the north east. There were 229 male GIBSONs in Gateshead &
180 female ones!

Good hunting,

Regards,

Sue
